Why isn't my chartplotter displaying AIS data?

If you have already  confirmed your chartplotter supports AIS but you cannot get it to display targets, we would recommend checking that the wires are connected correctly for NMEA 0183 installations. Manufacturers may use different signal names, however the following general guidelines will apply when connecting equipment:

  • positive signals (A or +) should be connected together
  • negative signals (B or -) should be connected together
  • transmit signals should be connected to receive signals and vice versa

You will also need to ensure the baud rates match. We recommend 38,400 baud for outputting AIS, as slower baud rates may drop messages in areas of high traffic.
